Most of the Irish whiskies that you find are of the unpeated variety. However, Connemara is a peated single malt variety whiskey that puts many others in this grouping to shame. One sip and you will realize that this is truly a wonderful whiskey, not only in the United States but around the world as well. Stemming from a collaboration of Gordon Mitchell, a Scottish distiller, along with the Cooley distillery, this wonderful blend became the very first Irish whiskey to be peated.

Connemara Peated Single Malt Irish Whiskey

Phenols per million is a term that you will hear that refers to the level of smoke contained within a peated whiskey. This will tell you just how much smoke as been mixed in with the single malt barley. Connemara boasts a milder ppm, registering at about 13-14 per bottle. Many of the other peat style whiskies will average around 25-30 when it comes to phenols per million. For Connemara, you are going to have a much milder smokey flavor instead of it being front and center like the other varieties that are available. You also get a good deal of finesse over punch with Connemara Irish whiskey because it has about 40% alcohol by volume.

Looking at the composition of Connemara, you have a blend of several aged whiskies ranging in age from 4 up to 8 years. The whiskey that has been aged 4 years brings a vibrancy to the blend while you have the other end of the spectrum in the 8 year aged whiskey that is more for depth. The 6 years aged whiskey has the ability to marry the two flavors together nicely for an overall smooth finish and delightful flavor.

When smelling the Connemara brand of Irish whiskey, you initially get a smokey smell that carries along a sweet undertone. Some might say that this is a smell reminiscent of a fire at a toffee shop. You have the smell of creosote along with sugar and even chocolate to make for an interesting aromatic blend. Upon sipping, you have the same smokey feel along with the soft caramels that you would expect from a sticky buns. You have a finish that is strong, rich and peaty.
