The Glenlivet 12 is widely available in retail outlets all over the country. I bought it for the first time in Costco and I paid $24 for it. It is one of the most inexpensive single malt scotch in America. Its balanced taste with citrus and floral accents are far from being just a cheap imitation of the real thing originating from Scotland. Actually they helped this drink to become one of the best sellers in its class. The 12 year expression of Glenlivet  is a whisky you can drink as frequently as you like without feeling guilty for spoiling yourself too much.

Beginner whisky drinkers will appreciate the Glenlivet a lot. Most experienced drinkers may think it doesn’t live up to those flavor-forward Scotches like The Macallan and Aberlour. they are right. This drink doesn’t compete in that category, not in the one of the expensive Speysiders like The Balvenie. Despite this, many whisky enthusiasts think it’s a must to have the Glenlivet in their cabinets.

The Glenlivet 12 is aged in second or third-fill bourbon casks. Despite this fact, it didn’t pick up the heavy oakiness of the wood but rather a very delicate vanilla background.

Color: Pale gold.

The nose doesn’t show any silky or caramel-like notes. It is rather limited to herbal notes such as grass, hay or green apple. There’s a very slight undertone of sugar, but nothing too impressive.

The flavor has a special brigthness with its vanilla and spices notes. It reminds very much of oatmeal porridge with cinnamon and brown sugar. Its sweetness is pleasant and it reminds a little bot of corn syrup rather than malt.

The medium length finish adds a little more cinnamon into the mix. It offers a good experience by rounding up the earlier flavors.

In conclusion, The Glenlivet is a remarkable whisky without outstanding negatives. It has some pleasant flavors, without being one of the most spectacular drinks out there. It is a good choice for a $24 single-malt whisky, especially for newbie drinkers, as well as for those who like to have a wide supply of choices in their cabinets. It is a whisky to try at least once, if not enjoy it on a regular basis with your friends.
