(rī)1 Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey

The (ri)1 whiskey, is a straight rye whiskey from Kentucky. It is pronounced “rye one”. It is made by Beam Global Spirits. This whiskey is not like the traditional rye whiskey that most people are used to. It has a sweeter and lighter taste, without losing that spicy snap. Its name, (ri)1, is rather confusing for some people, but the quality is really good, and it is a good fit for Beam’s family of products. It does possess great potentials for making a cocktail. A bartender can use this whiskey’s unique profile in making interesting creations of whiskey cocktails.

– It is light and spicy.
– You can use it to make different types of cocktails.

– It is not what a lot of people are accustomed to from a rye whiskey.

(ri)1 is not like many other rye whiskies. It has an all around lighter taste. When we consider rye, we are looking for a strong, rich whiskey that has some spiciness to it. The (ri)1 has a softer overtone, except it still has the spiciness. That aspect is actually brighter with a bigger snap. People who like their traditional ryes probably won’t like this one. However, for people who like Canadian whiskeys, who want one that is more like bourbon that keeps the rich grains, may enjoy this as an option.

Making a cocktail from (ri)1 is not that hard. It can easily blend into any whiskey cocktail, particularly the ones that have a profile that is more refreshing and not as heavy. The (ri)1 is great when used in Ward Eight, Whiskey Sour, or a New York Cocktail, because the sour and sweet mixers bring out the profile of this whiskey. On the contrary, it loses its profile in traditional rye cocktails like the Vieux Carre, Waldorf, and Colleen Bawn. All in all, (ri)1 is a versatile ingredient in cocktails and is a wonderful addition to the bar.

Tasting Notes:

The (ri)1 possesses a citrus, sweet scent with a grainy background. It goes in really smoothly, leading to a dry sweet/sour taste accompanied by a touch of spice and very light rye. It finishes with lingering sweetness with a light touch of spice all around.
